Experts Convene at the University of Tokyo to Explore the Food–Water–Environment Nexus
Interdisciplinary workshop fosters dialogue on sustainability challenges across food, water, and environmental systems.
Kashiwa, Japan – October 9, 2025
The University of Tokyo’s Sustainable Society Design Center (SSDC) hosted a full-day workshop titled “Understanding the Food–Water–Environment (FWE) Nexus through Expert Insights” at the White Rhino II building on the Kashiwa Campus. The event gathered experts from academia, research institutes, and the private sector to collaboratively reflect on interconnections among food, water, and environmental systems in the context of sustainability transitions.
The workshop was organized and facilitated by Dr. Marcin P. Jarzebski, Dr. Giles Sioen, Dr. Laÿna Droz, and Prof. Yasuko Kameyama (Sustainable Society Design Center, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences). It formed part of ongoing efforts to advance transdisciplinary dialogue on sustainability challenges and cross-sectoral nexus governance under the Kubota Endowment “Sustainable Bio-Loop” project (2024–2028).
An Interactive and Inclusive Format
Throughout the day, participants engaged in structured group discussions and interactive sessions designed to encourage knowledge sharing and systems thinking. The format emphasized open dialogue, creativity, and collective learning across disciplines such as environmental science, governance, economics, technology, and cultural studies.
